EMBRYONIC SUSPENSION
This is the first photograph documenting an ice sculpture series
from 1997-98. Each ice sculpture contains a newborn mouse. None
of these mice were killed for this piece, they were bought pre-frozen
from pet stores, as snake food.
The delicate balance between life and death is found in the
state of these tiny beings; just barely alive long enough to
be frozen to death, only to be frozen in an additional layer,
signifying life,(the womb). They are at once grotesque and beautiful,
and remind us of our own struggle with, and appreciation of
mortality.
